Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a significant, technological advancement in the treatment of Major Depression. Magnetic pulses stimulate areas of the brain thought to be involved in mood control in patients with depression. These pulses may have a lasting positive effect on the brain’s neurotransmitters making long-term remission possible. TMS is typically used when antidepressant medications are not effective, or as an alternative to medication.
· TMS was cleared for use by the FDA in 2008 for treatment of Major Depression
· Non-invasive, non-systemic treatment, no injections or medications used
· No down time – you can return to normal activities immediately
· You are awake during your treatment
· There are no negative effects on sleep or memory
What to Expect During Your TMS Treatment
· Each treatment takes between 19 and 37 minutes
· You’ll recline comfortably in a treatment chair
· You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation from the small coil positioned lightly on your head
· Treatments are 5 days per week over the course of 4-6 weeks
· Because there are no effects on alertness or memory, you can drive yourself to and from your treatment sessions
· We use the Neurostar System for TMS therapy at Holistic Psychiatry
